Roswell Greenway/Columns Drive: Oh Deer

Thoughts on the road:

Wow, for three runs in a row we have had a taste of Winter.  Guys, you’re going to have to layer up for Saturday morning runs from now till late March.  Both the Roswell Greenway (11/8) and Columns Drive (11/15) runs started off cold (low 30’s) but turned out to be great runs weather wise.  We had roughly 10 runners at each of the gatherings.  Two new runners joined us on the eighth for the Greenway run.

I did close to nine (painful) miles on the Greenway.  My knees were acting up some and John was patient with me stopping every mile to stretch.  Thank you John.  God’s grace and the beauty of His creation kept me going and boy the deer were out in force.  In addition to the crisp air and beautiful color leaves in the morning sun light, we saw 16+ deer on our run.  What at treat.

Can a Fall morning be any better?

Can a Fall morning be any better?

Last Saturday (11/15), Columns Drive, I ran some with everyone and everyone ran great.  My knees felt much better this time and boy Olga and Tom were flying.  I guess the cooler weather appeals to them.  It was the hardest run I’ve done in two and a half months.  Thank you guys for pushing me.

Are we warm yet?

Are we warm yet?

Seeing the deer reminds me of Psalm 42: 1 and 2.  “As the deer pants for the water, so my soul pants for Thee, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?”  David is telling us that his soul has a thirst than can only be quenched by drinking God.  Jesus tells the woman at the well, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

What do we thirst after?  The temporary satisfaction of the world or the unchangeable love of our Creator?  As we run do we taste God and want more of Him?  When we run do we feel God’s pleasure (“Chariots of Fire”)?  This is the best place to be, wanting God and God alone.  As the deer pants, we pant for the living water, Christ.  He is the only one who can quench our thirst eternally and save our lives.

Have a great run!!!

Chastain Park/Roswell Park: The Season is changing.

Thoughts on the road:

Wow what a change in weather a week brings.  The runs at Chastain Park and the Big Pumpkin 5k had awesome weather in contrast to the Roswell Park run last week which was cold and windy.  There was even a little snow in the air last week.  Brrrrrrrrr.  But cooler weather means faster runs.  Did you see Dawn’s time for the New York Marathon?  Where others struggled, she put in a PR run of 3:29.  Wow Dawn!!!  We also had a crowd in West Virginia running the Marshall Half Marathon.  Based on the pictures and Facebook posts it looked like people had a good time.  This week we have several people running the Soldier Marathon in Columbus GA.  Pray that the Lord will bless them with a great run and great weather.

Did I see snow flakes?

Did I see snow flakes?

It’s funny we are so prone to wanting consistency in our lives that we get to the point that we miss the blessings in change.  Changing seasons forces this on us as runners.  It forces us to adapt.  That is good.  Did you know that if you did the same run at the same pace month in and month out the benefit that we gain decreases over time.  That is not good.  We need to change things up to improve not only in running but in life.  Paul talks about baby Christians that don’t grow up and only long for milk instead of the meat.  Growth means change and we are meant to grow even if it hurts.  God wants your best.  So get out of your rut and get out of your comfort zone and grow.  You will be blessed by it.

Have a great run!!!
